The U.S. Army is introducing a program to ship 500 American teenagers to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina where they will spend 90 days training to meet the Army’s bottom-feeding physical standards. Despite some names being road tested in the media, the Army’s official acronym for the program is “FAT Camp”.

America lost a pioneer when Bill Russell passed away at age 88. To some, Russell’s achievements on the basketball court (11 NBA titles) make him an all-time great. To others, it is Russell’s activism that made him transcendent. No matter, Bill Russell’s bravery and courage on-and-off the court contributed to American progress. Where has leadership like this gone?

Track & field nerds remember Steve Magness as a high school senior competing in the Prefontaine Classic where he ran (valiantly) against a field of professionals in an attempt to break the 4-minute-mile barrier. Magness came close (4:01). He spent the next 20(ish) years growing into a world-class coach and in July, Magness released Do Hard Things. Read it.

From 2008-2019, America enjoyed a multi-event athletic contest testing speed, strength, endurance, agility, and coordination. This experience was delivered to post-collegiate amateurs as if each participant were a professional athlete. In fact, the experience became an NBC Sports television show. Could it return in 2023? If the rumors are true, you may have a reason to smile.

America’s high performing executives, especially in today’s hybrid work environment, equip their home offices with thoughtful design, elegant finishes, and efficiencies that provide for peak performance. This begs the question, why is it that America’s office buildings still largely reflect a soul-less, taste-less, post-WWII work aesthetic? If the current hybrid work model is here-to-stay, at least for some meaningful period, then why not rebuild offices to mirror the home office environments America’s peak performers have grown to covet and cherish? Hmmm…
